Veronica fascinates me in the movie. For a good chunk of the first half of the film, Veronica is very flirty with Logan and kind of playing with fire, which she acknowledges during the two car scenes (“Then again, you ever hear the one about the junkie who was satisfied with just one more taste of the good stuff? …Neither have I." // "Do I get a chip for this? …Leaving the bar without taking a sip?”). She knows she’s tempted, she’s acknowledging it, but instead of taking measures to distance herself, she’s willingly dances around it. When they’re alone, her body language becomes more open, more flirty, more playful. She’s enjoying the game as much as she’s enjoying the dive back into detective work, these are her adrenaline rushes.
When Piz- her boyfriend- is in the same room as Logan and Logan subtly calls her out on her behavior during the past few days a day later, Veronica acts very curiously in that her guilt- and irritation- is very obvious. Kristen does a pretty great character move of having Veronica look to and away from Logan very quickly and unsure of how to busy her hands- like a child trying to appear innocent.
Veronica also becomes agitated when “confronted.” She becomes prickly and avoids eye contact. She curtly agrees Logan should leave the reunion (a stark contrast from her playfulness just minutes earlier outside), and responds just as tersely when a peeved Logan- who was clearly getting vibes from her before- brings up Piz (startlingly similar to her open annoyance when Wallace informs her Piz is flying in). She knows she was doing wrong regarding her behavior with Logan and she doesn’t like being confronted, one way or another, with that knowledge.
While it’s not a likable character trait throughout the film for our heroine, I love how human it was. Veronica isn’t a stupid person, she knew exactly what she was doing and her visible unease when confronted showed that. It made me wonder how far Veronica would’ve dipped her toe in, had Piz not showed, if she would’ve tried to see how far she could take it. Would she have cheated? Probably not. But she sure enjoyed messing with the idea.
It’s not likable behavior, but I thought it to be a great character choice since it’s something we so rarely see with her. It made me go “Veronica, what the FUCK are you doing?” but it also made me very intrigued as to where it was going, character-wise for Veronica. It’s very much okay to let the hero be human, even if it makes them unlikable.

Love it all! My only minor comment is that I’m pretty certain Veronica would not have actually cheated. However, I do think that she would have let it go far enough that Logan, if not both of them, would have ultimately gotten hurt over the reigniting of the feelings. I can see a scenario where, without her epiphany, she would have denied it to her last breath, and they would have had yet another breakdown in communication trying to deal with it, and she would run. Just like typical Veronica. But, thankfully, Veronica did have character growth after 9 years, and she did get to her epiphany early enough, and with adequate maturity, that she was able to go after what she wanted in way that satisfied both of them (and us! but not Piz #sorrynotsorry).
I’m not saying Veronica would have cheated, but I do think the writing was set up to leave it as ambiguous as possible. Veronica was given “an out” by Piz, but what would’ve happened had the Keith attack/job pulling happened and Piz hadn’t dumped her? We never get Veronica’s mindset through voiceover during her phone call with Piz, or right before/during/after her “encounter” with Logan- Veronica shuts out the audience (as she always did when it came to talking about certain things, her VOs were almost always missing). We are no longer privy to her feelings, she cuts us off until the very end when the storm has calmed and she has everything she wants. But that’s fine, I think! I personally like the ambiguity of Veronica’s mindset. The “what ifs” make Veronica very interesting.
Also of note is Logan’s reactions to Veronica’s malarkey (I love that word!). He takes a beat to look right at Piz, putting two and two together. Teen Logan would’ve said something then and there, but adult Logan stays quiet. But he lets it stew, he starts thinking, starts dwelling because by the time Veronica visits him the next morning, he’s got major attitude. He shifts away from her proximity, (calmly) slams the door and gives her the obvious “wtf” eyebrow raise as he brings up Piz. He’s miffed but calm and Veronica’s reaction is still tense…because she knows. I mean, she might as well have shrieked and shoved Logan down the stairs at the reunion (also lol at how Veronica and Piz’s awkward attitude is leveled at Logan. Poor Logan).
Can you tell I love this specific Veronica character development choice? lol
I’m a HUGE fan of Veronica’s smoke and mirrors act regarding Logan in relation to Piz. She’s so rusty at it, she hasn’t had to pretend to not care in yeeeeeaaaars, and it shows. Logan sees right through that shit and I FIND IT HILARIOUS. Like, I know that I shouldn’t find it funny but I do, the way she moves her arms defensively and the who me? what? what are you talking about? I haven’t done nothin’. SHUDDUP. posturing, that’s Veronica to me and I LOVE HER. I love that she lies to herself. Characters that know their own mind all the damn time are boring as hell. Give me someone brilliant that struggles, has to think things through to make sense of their head and the heart. Who has friends that know that they struggle, accept it, and understand it.
For me this stuff made it really clear that they’re friends, these two, used to be and always will be, because she’s comfortable enough to be her truest self around him and vice versa. Veronica Mars, queen of control, allows herself to visibly react to Logan with a complete disregard towards self-preservation— she is leaving/has a boyfriend after all. No matter. She flirts, she’s warm, she’s teasing, she lets him finish her thoughts. The message is clear: I’m happy with you here, you make me feel good, and I’m good with you knowing that. At this point, they’re not lovers, they haven’t spoken in years, but there she is. It’s Veronica, back to herself.
Logan’s reaction to finding out about Piz was so telling. Sure he’s peeved because he let himself interpret her behavior with something like hope but he also knows it’s not really about him at all. HOLY MATURITY, BATMAN! He calls her out on it calmly and subtly, in a way that won’t spook the pony, and lets go of it pretty fast. Because he knows her and knows how she works. Oof, that Logan Echolls. Sure he’s built and a Naval Aviator but he’s also a grown man who will back up and give the hero room to decide things for herself because above all things he respects her.
There’s no question for me why she jumps him when she does. It’s a response to that respectful restraint, to the caring for both herself and her father, to the safety of this particular person. It’s old feelings meeting new ones, the powerful combination of the two.
